UPCYCLING

For this project, I used magazine as my material. Magazines are easy to obtain, and once you have finished reading the magazines, they usually become rubbish. This is why I think magazine is a very suitable material for this project. Almost all household have magazines inside their houses, and once in a while, they would just pile them up together and throw them in a recycle bin. I think that this is such a waste, as magazine can be quite useful even after being read.

In order to manipulate the material, I've decided to cut them, fold them and roll them up. The original methods is to roll them with pencil. But I decided to measure them correctly and cut them, to get the consistency in thickness. I also roll them into a solid form, with no gaps in each roll, so that it's more sturdy, although it does make it heavier. Then I compile them together using PVA glue into the shape that I desired.

I decided to make them in different diameters, so that it gives pattern to the product. It also helps giving forms so that it's not symmetrical, and the small pieces helps fill in the gaps to make it stronger. The different colour on every roll, I believe is the beauty of the material, and it enriches the aesthetic value of the design.

  1. Nice Design Ella!!! I love the way you have used different diameters of circles in the collection of your bowl. It adds to the illusion and effect when the bowl is comprised together. It is clever to see that you haven’t gone with the original form of a bowl, but a different form. A suggestion for improvement is if you could try and play around with the magazine, in the sense that they could be connected in ways with no additional material, i.e. PVA glue. Otherwise the appearance of your design is very prominent.

  2. So interesting to see the design up close. It's obvious you've spent a lot of time doing this and all your hard work has paid off. Great job this year - have a great holiday!

  3. Hey Ella im not sure if the old comment was saved so im writing another one ! :)
I think your design is successful and i like the interesting pattern and colour created from the magazine! The indivudual circles are all different sizes which makes your basket unique.
Good work and hope you have fun in the plane! be safe ~

  4. I found this design very visually appealing, the idea i found way very creative and boasted a lot of colour. My only concern with this design would be the amount of glue that would be required, and so I would suggest potentially threading the magazine rolls onto wire.

  5. LIke helen mentioned the design is very aesthetically appealing and you can see the amount of effort put into creating the product. Improvement wise? the only thing i can think of is developing the shape more like instead of a flat base different length of circles formed a base
but other than that nice product

i love the colours of your basket and i think it really brings positive emotions to the user.
i also think that the shape of the basket could be explored a little more but other than that good work =]
